A Rich History Rooted in Nature

The Aburi Botanical Gardens were officially opened in March 1890, making them one of the oldest and most prestigious botanical gardens in West Africa. Spanning an impressive 64 hectares, the gardens were established by the British colonial government, originally intended as a sanatorium for recovering soldiers due to the area's cool climate and clean air. Over time, it evolved into a center for botanical research and education.
Today, it is one of the most fascinating places in Ghana, drawing both local and international visitors. The gardens boast a wide variety of indigenous and exotic plant species, including towering palm trees, bamboo groves, flowering trees, medicinal plants, and a large ficus tree that's over a hundred years old. Some of the tree species here were planted by notable historical figures, including Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Why Visit Aburi Botanical Gardens?

Whether you're a nature lover, a photographer, a family on a weekend outing, or simply looking to escape the urban hustle of Accra, Aburi Botanical Gardens offers something for everyone. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves, makes it an ideal spot for picnics, walking tours, and educational visits.

You’ll also find several sculptures and landmarks scattered around the garden, including a famous tree that has grown around and absorbed an old helicopter propeller—one of the garden’s most talked-about oddities.

Guided tours are available, and knowledgeable guides share rich insights into the flora, fauna, and history of the site. There is also a small restaurant and vendors selling local crafts and refreshments near the garden’s entrance.

How to Get to Aburi

Getting to the Aburi Botanical Gardens is relatively easy and affordable, especially for travelers coming from Accra. Here are the main transport options:

  • By Public Transport: You can take a Mini-Bus or TroTro from several stations in Accra:

    • Tema Station in Accra Central

    • Odawna Station, near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle

    • Madina Station, in the eastern suburbs of Accra

  • By Metro Mass Bus: This is considered the best choice for comfort and reliability. The Metro Mass buses depart from Accra and pass through Aburi, offering a more spacious ride compared to the crowded TroTros.

  • By Private Vehicle: If you have access to a car, the drive from Accra to Aburi is scenic and straightforward. The journey follows a modern dual-carriageway, taking about 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.

Along the route, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive up the Akwapim Hills, with roadside vendors selling fresh fruits, roasted corn, and handmade crafts. Once you begin the climb into the hills, the air cools noticeably and the lush greenery signals that you're approaching one of Ghana’s most beautiful getaways.
